Reflecting on my team’s State Cup championship journey brings up big emotions for me.
Anyone who’s ever played with or coached me is probably asking “when hasn’t she felt big emotions?” It’s just now sinking in that we actually won the tournament, and I’ve gotta say, “it feels pretty amazing“.
My personal road to State Cup was a physical and mental roller coaster. After getting injured mid season and then having to undergo surgery to remove a bone fragment that was impeding the joint in my right big toe, I wasn’t sure when I’d be fully back on the field. It was not fun and I really missed playing with my team. Fortunately, after countless Physical Therapy visits, I was able to return to practice about two months after my surgery.
Our 2025 SoCal State Cup Run
My first State Cup tournament was in 2018 and I’ve played with maybe five or six different teams. The best way to describe this year’s run with my current team would be: “LOCKED IN”
The success of this team stemmed from our coaches, William and Gio. They put us to work three nights a week and their unconditional support was the glue that kept our team tight. They are both incredibly patient and focused on helping us improve our game.
For me personally, they have been instrumental in helping me improve my mental game. I’ve learned that playing frustrated is a game killer for me. Staying composed and focused, even if I’m unhappy with a first touch or a missed shot, is the name of the game and something I will continue to work on.
The pivotal moment for our team during the tournament was our win against LASC. The game ended in PKs. We made every single shot and I think that was when it all clicked for us. The best part of this tournament for me was hearing William and Gio repeatedly say, “Go have fun!” The joy of the game returned for me, I felt lighter and everything felt right. Go CASC!
